Boxwood japonica ‘Green Beauty’

Widely used for edging and hedging, giving a more formal look with it’s small leaves and neat appearance. Adaptable to growing in sun or shade in any soil, left to grow unchecked has a soft and billowing appearance. The best shrub for topiary shapes, e.g. globes, pyramids etc.
Carissa ‘Boxwwod Beauty’

Easy to grow including where ocean wind and salt spray are a problem and fairly drought tolerant. Blooms better in full sun but can tolerate shade. A good lawn substitute where it can be kept fairly low (1.5-2’). Has small spines so not to be used near walkways.
Ficus nitida
medium, tall, evergreen
California’s strongest, dense, tall hedge, reaching 25’. Roots are only invasive when not watered or clipped frequently. Grow in full sun to partial shade.
Ligustrum texanum
medium, evergreen
A darker green hedge than Ficus and never reaching a height of more than 12’. Occasional white flowers, fragrance described as “pleasant” to “unpleasant”. They need ample water to flourish and grow in full sun to partial shade.
Pittisporum tobira
low, medium, evergreen
A dependable, Mediterranean classic with attractive foliage and fragrant cream flowers. A medium height, informal hedge that looks best when hand-clipped. Prefers full sun but will perform in partial shade in any soil.
Podocarpus gracillior
tall, evergreen
Good-looking foliage resembling a needle rather than a leaf on what is a tall, background hedge. It needs frequent fertilizer and is not especially drought tolerant. Will grow in any soil in sun or shade.
Rhapiolepis indica
low, evergreen
One of the best background plantings, large-scale ground covers and informal hedges with white spring flowers. Easy to grow in any soil in sun or partial shade.
Trachelospermum jasminoides
medium, evergreen
Probably the most versatile plant; use as a vine to cover a fence or wall, as a ground-cover for mass planting or lawn substitute. Grows in all soils in partial sun to shade. White, sweet scented flowers in the spring.
